How do you choose a tattoo?

Often on an impulse! I started tattooing discreet places that can be camouflaged easily, afraid of not being at ease. I prefer aesthetics to meaning. I don’t consider myself an open book! Except for my tattoo in memory of the victims of November 13, 2015, and the friends I lost in this tragedy.

Which shop do you get inked at?

Most of the time I get inked at home by friends –some still apprentices, but also in shops like Art Corpus, Hand In Glove and Ravenink.

I don’t consider myself an open book

Who are the best tattoo artists for you?

I admire the work of tattoo artists who master color and realism … but not on my skin! I would give a lot to be inked by Mikael De Poissy. His work is inspired by stained-glass panels (another of my passions).

Your next tattoo?

I keep the space I’ve left for large pieces. I give myself time to do so. Meanwhile, I’ll cover some of my tattoos. I’m not into using laser, but I feel a tattoo can have several lives and evolve.

How do you choose a tattoo?

For the first ones, I didn’t choose visible areas. You look for an artist with a style you like and he sublimates the vague idea you had. After a few years, getting inked becomes more like buying art: it doesn’t tell a story as much, it rather transcribes a feeling, an emotion. That’s the principle of the flash. For the location, it’s variable. Each body has lines: you can follow them or decide to break them.

Which shop do you get inked at?

I like to get a tattoo when traveling. That’s always better than a snowball as a souvenir!

I appreciate artists who love their work

Who are the best tattoo artists for you?

Johnny Gloom and Louis Loveless. They have similar styles that really speak to me, in addition to being two particularly interesting human beings.

Your next tattoo?

A black rose along the length of my torso with Johnny Gloom. I like the symbolism she created for this concept (her lover offered her 100 black roses, she drew them all) and also because she likes the size and location of the tattoo and I appreciate artists who love their work.

How do you choose a tattoo?

I always sketch my tattoos. They are very personal and have a meaning –often metaphorical– much deeper than their appearance. I choose where to place them, so the result is homogeneous and totally intertwined with my overall body.

Which shop do you get inked at?

I found my tattoo artist, Charla Chak, by chance, just when I settled in Paris. He was originally working at Gevy Tattoo; he now is at Savage Tattoo. He’s become a good friend.

My tattoos have a much deeper meaning than their appearance

Who are the best tattoo artists for you?

Someone who knows you and is able to visualize what you are explaining to him. Famous tattoo artists lack this proximity.

Your next tattoo?

I have lots of ideas, lots of things to say and write. But I just want people to understand that this is what I’ll take away with me. It will be the work of my life.

How do you choose a tattoo?

I mainly have the arm tattooed, from the shoulder to the wrist. What’s interesting are the spaces left blank, the voids created and how the next tattoo artists will deal with them. At first, I arrived with my own sketches. What I wanted above all was a technician that could execute a precise figure. As I got addicted to it, I’ve turned to artists whose work, style or themes I am sensitive too. I always ask what flashes are available. Otherwise I throw an idea and trust the artist.

Which shop do you get inked at?

In Paris: Hand In Glove Tattoo Shop, Mystery Tattoo Club and Le Phylactère.

What’s interesting is how the next tattoo artists will deal with the blank spaces

Who are the best tattoo artists for you?

Duke Riley!

Your next tattoo?

I am lucky to regularly go to Hand In Glove: not only are the residents very gifted, but also they often invite incredible guests from all corners of the globe. So, my next tattoo will certainly be improvised with one of them.

How do you choose a tattoo?

I sketch or visualize a tattoo and discuss it with the tattoo artist. Then, I let his imagination do the work!

Which shop do you get inked at?

By several artists in Portugal: Carlos Martins, tru.x.luv, Ricardo Natz, Nelson Graf Reis and in Paris: Marcus Onze, Romain Shreiner, Alecto.

I let the tattoo artist’s imagination express itself

Who are the best tattoo artists for you?

Teresa Sharpe, Logan, Ka, Akos, Aaron Springs … All these artists have a colorful work.

Your next tattoo?

My next monumental tattoo will be on the top of my right arm. It’s a project referring Alice in Wonderland. My little sister and my two grandmothers are called Alice! Gentle reminder!

How do you choose a tattoo?

I follow three steps: first the aesthetic and the location on the body, then the style, finally I seek the tattoo artist whom I consider the most qualified to achieve what I desire.

Which shop do you get inked at?

Art Corpus, 23 Keller and Mystery Tattoo Club. I also like to get inked when I travel; it symbolizes a stage of my life. That’s what I like in tattoos, when I look at them, they bring me memories back.

When you start getting tattoos, you can’t stop

Who are the best tattoo artists for you?

I really admire the work of Easy Sacha.

Your next tattoo?

Finish my arm! Then, get one on one leg, and, after that, I’ll get one on the left forearm. When you start getting tattoos, you can’t stop!

Julien Giacalone As far as Julien can remember he always wanted to be a gangster. Unlike Henry Hill, he mostly became a writer. But a strong part of him is still anti-establishment. Which part? Only the good half.
