The Insane NYC Brunch Dishes That Will Cure Your Hangover

The hardest part of a hangover isn't figuring out how to nurse yourself back to health, it's choosing where to eat.

Something about a hangover just screams “feed me greasy breakfast food,” and we’re more than happy to oblige. The bittersweet thing about NYC is there are just too many dang options. So instead of making your poor aching head peruse through Grubhub for 40 minutes in bed, we’ve handpicked our favorite NYC hangover lifesavers.

If you’re not hungover right now, don’t worry. Come Saturday morning, I’m sure you will be. Do yourself a favor and bookmark this page for later, because you’ll need it. Or, maybe be proactive and book a table at these places in advance, because nobody wants to wait for a table when they’ve got a throbbing headache.

1. Queens Comfort Sweet Potato & Cheddar Empanadas

Queens Comfort is one of those places where everything on the menu may or may not have been invented by someone who had the munchies. Either way, that makes it an amazing place to hit when you got way too drunk last night. From Cap’t Crunch chicken fingers to cheese covered tater tots — or “disco tots,” as they call them — Queens Comfort will turn your discomfort into coziness with their plates of hearty goodness. These sweet potato and cheddar empanadas are not only vegetarian, but also the perfect way to combat that cotton mouth.

2. Shopsins Duck & Egg Sliders on Mac & Cheese Pancakes

You know those ridiculously fattening and greasy fast-food Frankenstein hybrids you see on Instagram? You can probably get a good chunk of them at Shopsins. The legendary NYC spot serves sliders on donuts, chorizo pancakes stuffed with Nutella, and these beautiful duck & egg sliders on mac & cheese pancakes. If you’re the type of person who can never decide on nursing your hangover with something sweet or savory, Shopsins is likely to have something to give you the best of both worlds.

3. Talde Brooklyn’s Sausage, Cheese, & Egg Fried Rice

Okay, you’re lying if you’ve never eaten leftover Chinese food for breakfast. The good news is that Talde Brooklyn has a killer breakfast inspired fried rice that will have you going from 0 to 100 real quick. It’s like your favorite breakfast sandwich rolled into your Chinese take-out, except more awesome somehow.

4. Black Seed Bagels Lox

A good bagels and lox combo is not hard to find in NYC, and it might be a little basic, but there’s a reason why everyone is obsessed with Black Seed Bagels. First off, they give you a good serving of lox on your bagel so that you don’t feel cheated. Second off, they have a wood fired oven inside the restaurant where they also hand roll the bagels. If you’re on a diet, don’t come here, because they’ll refuse to scoop your bagels. Sorry ‘bout it.

5. The Smith’s Short Rib Hash

The Smith has an amazing brunch. It sits right on the line between “ridiculous” and “traditional,” and they also have options that err on the healthy side and are still delicious, like their unreal Brussels Sprouts or their Smoked Salmon Toast. But if you’re hungover, then the Short Rib Hash is the way to go. It involves Jalapeño cheddar grits, fried shoestring potatoes, and plenty of tender short rib meat. Plus, the Midtown and East Village locations offer a free cocktail with an entrée order, in case you’re the type who needs a Bloody Mary to cure your hangover.

6. Avenida Cantina’s Churro Fried Chicken Sandwich

You may be able to grab a hot churro while waiting for your Subway, but you’ve probably never had a churro like this. Avenida Cantina turns their churros into bread and places a fat piece of fried chicken in between them. It’s honestly a work of art, don’t you think? If eating this masterpiece is all you do that day besides sleeping, it wasn’t a waste of a day.

7. Sao Mai’s Pho Sao Mai

The Vietnamese soup otherwise known as Pho might not be your typical hangover (or breakfast) fare, but it’s amazing after a long night of drinking, trust me. Sao Mai’s menu only has 7 pho options so you don’t have to half-drunkenly try to decide on one soup out of 20. If you spent all your money on drinks last night, you’re in luck, because a big bowl of soup at Sao Mai will cost you under $10.

8. Speedy Romeo’s Ritz Pizza

Let’s face it: You probably ate pizza late last night, so why not continue the trend into the morning — er, afternoon. Speedy Romeo pizzeria has plenty of brunch pizzas to fix your pizza fiending, including this ritz pizza, which involves grilled Taylor ham, provel cheese, and Tabasco sauce to wake you the f up.

9. Crave Fish Bar’s Fish & Waffles

Chicken and waffles is so passé. Just kidding, it’s not, I would never diss my favorite breakfast dish like that. But, if you’re looking for something new, Crave Fish Bar has you covered. Their spin on the comfort food classic involves fish instead of chicken, and their fish & waffles dish puts fried hake on top of Belgian waffles with a creamy kimchi butter and a sweet chili sauce for kick. But if that’s not your bag, they have an aptly named “Hangover Wrap” filled with fried shrimp, potatoes, and hot sauce.
