Exploration Destination: Berlin’s Abandoned Water Park BLUB

The most ambitious water park of the 80s is today the paradise of urban explorers.

After giving us the details of the abandoned Iraqi Embassy in Berlin, our photographer Adlan continues his urban explorations by taking us to the abandoned BLUB waterpark in Neukölln.

Where is BLUB and what was it exactly?

BLUB, Berlin Air and Bathing Paradise, was an aquatic park built in 1985. It had a huge swimming pool with all sorts of additions like water slides, fountains, tropical sceneries, and a sauna garden. Unfortunately, the park closed down in 2005 because of “health reasons.” (It was rats. Apparently, the attraction of a water park is not species specific. Why you gotta ruin the fun for everyone, humans?) In 1985, this place must have been the Mecca of Water Parks. Now it’s the Mecca of Urban Explorers. If you’re trying to head there, it’s in Neukölln—Britz, just after the ring on the Buschkrugallee.

What’s the ambiance like?

The feel of this place is totally different than other abandoned spots I’ve been to. There’s more light, more space, more openness. True, it does smell pretty bad, but don’t let that ruin your fun. It’s a great place to hang with a friend or to get some quality solo time. When I was there, there were a bunch of art students working on a project with a beamer downstairs. So if you’re looking for some inspiration, this is a place you’re gonna want to check out.

What’s your favorite memory from this place?

Okay, I’m gonna be honest, when I said: “art students” were “working on a project” I really meant it was a porn video. But it wasn’t some cheap, low-quality shit. They were pretty legit! Definitely, something I won’t forget for a long time.

Is it difficult to get in? Dangerous?

Absolutely not. It’s neither difficult nor dangerous. I’ve never heard of anyone being kicked out, and people go there all the time, so you should be good on that front.

Is it a good place to chill?

I %100 recommend going there. Grab some friends, beers, weed, speakers and explore the area. Be careful though because there’s a lot of glass around and at night there’s no light to see.

What is distinctive about the place as far as photography goes?

There are a bunch of aspects about the place that makes for a great photo shoot. It’s open with a lot of great light, it’s really dusty, and there’s a bunch of graffiti and street art to give the place a unique look. If you wanna get the best pictures I suggest being there between 2 and 7 pm in the summer.
