A Complete Guide to Weserstrasse

Young, cosmopolitan, lively and creative: Weserstrasse just sums up Berlin perfectly. Follow us for our best tips on what to see & do there!

When friends visit and ask for recommendations on what to see in Berlin, I always send them to Weserstrasse and tell them that any place they will walk into will be good. Except for the dodgy Indian restaurants at the very beginning of the street, near Hermannplatz, that is.

This bustling street is filled with stylish cafés, small independent shops selling everything from books to wine and upcycled clothes and, at night, becomes a hotspot for eating and drinking. New places seem to be popping up every week in this up and coming area that is the heart of Berlin’s creative scene.

We selected five of our favorite hangouts, but do see it for yourself! Honorable mentions go to hot sauce shop and restaurant Crazy Bastard Sauce, queer bar Silverfuture, French-inspired eatery and cocktail bar Beuster and pizza-by-the-slice vendor Pizza a Pezzi. The adjacent streets are also full of interesting spots and we strongly recommend you wander around when visiting.

Topics is a conceptual English bookshop where books are sorted not alphabetically but, as the name suggests, by topics. These include obvious categories such as fashion, food or Amsterdam as well as more eccentric ones such as “Written in prison”, “Infidelities” or “Female detectives”. The staff is friendly and well-read, and the shop offers free coffee as well as weekly events with talks by guest authors.

Unikat

This tattoo parlor also functions as a shop where you can discover a collection of designer’s and antique jewelry as well as other trinkets from their “treasure cabinet”. Aurélie, the owner, tattoos under the name Madame Unikat and along a carefully curated roster of tattoo artists, completed by visiting artists from around the world. A rare option in professional studios, they also offer hand poked tattoos.

Ratzeputz

In need of a little pick-me-up after a hearty meal or before heading out? Ratzeputz has got just what you need. This dark and cosy bar specializes in the eponymous spirit, a 58%-alcohol ginger Schnapps that was created in 1877. Served ice-cold in a shot glass, this is the perfect drink for late night fun. But that doesn’t mean there’s only one reason to visit Ratzeputz. You’ll love how affordable it is and the fact that it basically aims to be a relaxed hangout spot for friends, because that’s just what it is.

Weserkrug

Weserkrug is the kind of places one just keeps visiting. Serving inspired cocktails, a solid selection of wine by the glass, craft beer and other treats for every taste, this sailor’s bar also boasts a unique interior decoration. Each visit will have you noticing a new detail, starting with the fact that the chandeliers above the bar are held up by transparent threads and look like they’re floating. Add affordable drinks, a super friendly staff and occasional vinyl-only DJ sets by local DJs and we know you’ll keep coming back for more.

Wild Things

One of the newer places on our list, Wild Things is the sibling of Industry Standard, Sonnenallee’s hip eatery and bar that has been the talk of the town since its opening in early 2015. Focusing on natural wine with an ever-changing selection of drinkable gems, their team also serves creative bar snacks. Favorites include the brown butter popcorn, their beef tartare and incredibly indulgent toasties, available with short rib or eggplant kasundi. Come early and stay late or drop by for one last glass as they are usually open well into the night.
